Principal's Message

Cloverdale Families,

Today in our classrooms, students had the opportunity to explore meaningful stories about empathy, friendship, and character by author Trudy Ludwig. Ludwig’s books offer relatable situations that help children navigate social dynamics, understand how their words and actions impact others, and build a positive school culture. We encourage you to reread these titles together at home tonight or check them out from your local library. These stories create wonderful openings for honest conversations.

Here is what each grade level read today:
To help you connect with your child about what they learned, here are four discussion questions for each book:

Kindergarten & 1st Grade: The Power of One
  • What is one small, kind thing you can do when you notice someone sitting alone or looking sad?
  • How does it make your body and heart feel when someone invites you to play or shares a smile with you?
  • Why do you think small acts—like saying "hello" or helping pick up dropped crayons—can make such a big difference in someone's day?
  • What can we do as a family to make sure everyone in our house and neighborhood feels cared for?

2nd & 3rd Grade: Sorry!
  • What makes an apology feel real to you, versus someone just saying the word "sorry" to get out of trouble?
  • Beyond saying "I'm sorry," what can a person do to actually fix a mistake or repair hurt feelings?
  • Why can it be so hard to admit when we are wrong, and what helps you find the courage to do it anyway?
  • If someone apologizes to you but continues doing the same hurtful thing, how does that affect your trust in them?

4th & 5th Grade: Just Kidding
  • How do you tell the difference between playful teasing where everyone is laughing and hurtful teasing disguised as a joke?
  • Why do people sometimes hide behind the phrase "just kidding" after saying something mean, and why doesn't that make it okay?
  • What is an effective way to set a boundary when a friend's humor crosses the line and starts to feel personal or embarrassing?
  • If you see someone in your friend group using humor to put someone else down, what is a safe, realistic way to step in or support the person being targeted?

Thank you for partnering with us to nurture kind, empathetic, and resilient learners!

With appreciation,
Julia Bradley, Principal

Parent Drop-Off Reminders

Drop off Begins at 7:30 am
For your child's safety, please note that district morning supervision does not begin until 7:30 AM. While staff members often head outside a few minutes early to unlock the gates, students should never be dropped off until you visually confirm a staff member in a safety vest is present on duty. For pick up, please give a courtesy notification before 2:00pm of any changes in who/how your child is going home.  This notification keeps the flow moving smoothly for all.   Thank you for partnering with us to keep our students safe and supervised!

Parking Lot Safety
Take turn:  Please remember to alternate and let drivers turn left onto Parrish Gap from the gravel lot. Taking turns keeps the line moving steadily for everyone.

Slow down: The parking lot is extremely busy each morning with arriving buses, parked cars, and families on foot. Dropping your speed gives you more reaction time and keeps everyone safe.

Always use the designated crosswalks: Drivers often can't see small children between vehicles. Sticking to marked crosswalks ensures all our students stay visible and reach the doors safely.

Thank you for your patience and for helping protect our kids each morning!

Character Trait for the Month - Responsibility

Dear Families,

This month, our school focus is on Responsibility—learning what it means to be dependable, follow through on our commitments, and take ownership of our choices.

To bring this concept to life in the classroom, we are using Officer Judy Hopps from Disney’s Zootopia as our role model. Judy embodies responsibility from the start: she works tirelessly toward her goals, takes pride in every task assigned to her (even parking duty!), and steps forward to fix mistakes when things don’t go as planned.

Throughout the month, we will be discussing practical ways students can practice responsibility at school and at home, from organizing their belongings to helping neighbors and keeping promises.

We encourage you to ask your child about Judy Hopps and chat at home about the community helpers who make a difference in your daily lives!

Warmly,
Mrs. Augsburger
